Alabama churches begin to assess
damages from Danny's heavy rainfall
by United Methodist News Service
Annual conferences in the path of Hurricane Danny were
cautiously optimistic after the rain stopped the morning of July
21. Torrential rain fell mainly in Alabama but also soaked parts
of western Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana.
"We apparently got off a lot better than we expected," said
Andrew Ellis, editor of the Alabama-West Florida Advocate, later
that day. The majority of damage to churches was water related,
either roof leaks or flooding, he said. None was considered
major.
Three churches reported problems. The basement was flooded at
Fowl River (Ala.) United Methodist Church, located on the
outskirts of Mobile.
Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, located in a town of
the same name at the top of Mobile Bay's eastern shore, has minor
water damage and lost part of its sign.
Gulf Shores United Methodist Church, right on the Gulf of
Mexico, held services Sunday in spite of standing water in one
corner of the sanctuary.
Power was still out in some areas, and authorities were not
permitting residents to return to the sections where the flooding
continued.
Alabama-West Florida Conference officials planned to tour the
affected areas July 22.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has
established an Advance Special to provide emergency relief and
recovery assistance. Gifts to Advance No. 982515-0, "Hurricanes
'97," will aid people living in the United States, the Caribbean,
and Latin America.
