Concern for Workers Task Force
offers Labor Day litany, message

                 by United Methodist News Service

WASHINGTON (UMNS) -- The United Methodist Concern for Workers
Task Force, which came into being earlier this year, has created a
Labor Day litany and message for the denomination.
Invoking "Jesus, worker and carpenter from Nazareth," the
litany asks help in developing a deeper understanding of God's
presence and for all people in doing justice and building
community in their places of employment.
The task force's Labor Day Message -- one page in a standard
bulletin -- cites the church's traditional concern for working
people and for just economic systems. It announces plans for a
global consultation on work issues and the church, and it urges
local efforts to end sweatshop abuses.
The task force held its first -- and only 1997 -- meeting in
St. Louis in February, but in a subsequent telephone call, its
executive committee named a three-person writing team based here.
It included the Rev. Michael Szpak, religion labor coordinator for
the CIO-AFL and a consultant to the task force; the Rev. Pharis
Harvey, a member of the task force; and Mark Harrison, a Board of
Church and Society staff executive assisting the task force.
Bishop Albert Mutti, chairman of the task force, circulated
copies to all active bishops in mid-July.
Camera-ready copy of both documents is available from Linda
Nettles at the Board of Church and Society by calling her at (202)
488-5641.
