Dillard University brings Japanese teens
to learn English, about multiculturalism

                 by United Methodist News Service

To preserve its culturally diverse climate, United Methodist-
related Dillard University, New Orleans, brings Japanese ninth
grade students to the campus annually for three weeks of English
classes and black history study.
The students, from the all-male Kwansei Gakuin Junior High
School in Nishinomiya, Japan, have come to the campus of the
historically black college, since 1989, as participants in
Dillard's Summer Intensive English Program for Japanese Students.
A group of 25 arrived July 31 to begin the 1997 class and to
receive instruction using materials from African-American culture
and history.
Each year, the students are involved in classroom work, field
trips in and outside New Orleans and weekend experiences in the
homes of area families.
According to Makoto Fujita, director of Dillard's Japanese
Studies Program, it is a great opportunity for students from Japan
to study at a historically black institution and be enriched by
New Orleans' multicultural climate.
The 1997 program officially opens Aug. 3 with a Unity
