WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES
CENTRAL COMMITTEE 11-19 SEPTEMBER 1997
LAST MEETING BEFORE EIGHTH ASSEMBLY

Press Accreditation

You are invited to apply for press accreditation to attend our forthcoming
central committee which will be crucial to the future life of the World
Council of Churches (WCC).

The WCC is in a state of great change. The Common Vision and
Understanding study process is examining what the WCC should be and
do in the next century. Our Eighth Assembly (to be held in Zimbabwe
3-14 December 1998) will take vital decisions on this matter. The next
meeting of the central committee will finalise documents on these topics
which will then be fed into the Assembly. Therefore, what is decided
by the central committee this September will very much influence the
Assembly s work next year.

On September s agenda:
Common Understanding and Vision - Policy statement to be
approved
Details of proposed new structure and staffing
Moderator s Report - Aram I expected to talk about recent
developments in Orthodox churches which affect their relationship to the
WCC
General Secretary s report - Will include major section on
globalisation
International Affairs - Statement on Nigeria expected
	Plenary sessions on
Worship and Spirituality - Jean Vanier, founder of the
L Arche community to speak
Ecumenical Decade of the Churches in Solidarity with
Women - Final Report of team visits to all WCC member churches
Theology of Life - Reflections on insights gained from
recent study process
The Decade and Theology of Life plenaries will bring to
the central committee some of the atmosphere and experience of an
African Sokoni (market place) which was the setting for a final gathering
of the Theology of Life project
Conference on World Mission and Evangelism in Brazil -
Report
Eighth Assembly - Discussion of theme "Return to God -
Rejoice in Hope" plus update on practicalities and programme
		 Other current WCC work

An application form for accreditation is enclosed. Please complete and
return as soon as possible. With confirmation of accreditation, we shall
send further details including a list of hotels in Geneva with whom we
have negotiated special rates.
