ENID, Okla. -- Several senior level PGA
members will "link up" in August with Phillips
University students and members of the city's
First Missionary Baptist Church to rebuild the
structure, demolished June 1996 in an arson fire.
Church members broke ground for the new
facility in January. On Aug. 17 senior members of
the Professional Golf Association and Phillips
students will join with Habitat for Humanity to
work on the church building.
The Habitat-sponsored rebuilding project is
one part of weekend activities which include an
Aug. 18 golf tournament involving the touring
pros. The Phillips University Classic Pro-Am,
sponsored by Phillips, Habitat for Humanity and
First Missionary Baptist, will be held at Enid's
Oakwood Country Club.
Phillips also will host an Aug. 17 reception
and silent auction featuring items donated by the
visiting Professional Golf Association members.
The auction items will include an autographed
photo donated by 1997 Masters Champion Tiger
Woods.
"It's our honor to be the organizing sponsor
for the event," said Phillips President G. Curtis
Jones Jr. "We think the Classic Pro-Am is the
perfect way for people to have fun and help three
great organizations."
"It will be a wonderful sight watching
community members, church members, students and
PGA professionals and celebrities join together to
help First Missionary with the Enid Habitat
project," said Charles Coody. The 1996 Canadian
Senior Open champion organized the golf tourney.
Phillips University is a higher education
institution related to the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ).
