NCC7/18/97 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
UPDATE FROM CHURCH WORLD SERVICE CAMBODIA PROGRAM
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, July 17 ---- While international
efforts continue to try to resolve Cambodia's political
crisis -- fueled by a July 5-6 coup -- the situation within
the country is calm and returning to normal, reports Howard
Jost, Church World Service Country Director. Markets and
most shops are open as usual. Governmental offices have
also opened, civil servants have returned to work and
children are back in school.
The Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) has distributed blankets
to some hospitals. Blankets, rice pots, mosquito nets,
plastic sheets, sarongs, kramas, water containers, canned
fish and rice have been given to families left homeless in
the fighting. Some of the items were originally contributed
by CWS, mostly paid from the Blanket Fund.
The stocks in the CRC warehouse are now depleted, and
there are not sufficient funds to meet the needs of the
affected population, Mr. Jost said. Additional assistance
for those injured by the recent fighting is necessary, and
the CRC warehouse must be replenished. A multi-agency
assessment team will detail assistance needs soon.
