    Kirkpatrick Responds to Supreme Court's
    Rejection of RFRA

    by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, stated clerk of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), who has worked on the issue of religious
liberty, expressed "deep disappointment" over the the U.S. Supreme Court's
decision to strike down the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA).

Saying that RFRA was adopted to restore, legislatively, protection of
religious expression that had been restricted by another court decision,
"Oregon v. Smith," Kirkpatrick said the court's RFRA decision "puts
religious groups and individuals once again at risk and makes it imperative
that religious people of every faith band together to address this
situation."

He pledged that "the offices of the General Assembly and the General
Assembly Council will now join with others in the religious community to
find effective ways to respond to this most recent assault on religious
liberty."
