LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Under the daily theme "Laying Aside Every Weight -- Our
Oneness in Christ," the Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women opened
July 10 with a morning plenary sermon presented by the Rev. Angela L. Ying,
associate executive of Seattle Presbytery and executive secretary of the
Church Council of Greater Seattle, an ecumenical organization in the
Pacific Northwest.

Worshipers were also energized and inspired by Jim, Jean and Mike
Strathdee, accomplished singers, song and worship leaders, concert artists
and composers who have performed throughout the United States and Canada.

Following morning worship, conference participants discovered that many
of the Gathering workshops were filled to capacity. In order to allow
others an opportunity to attend, participants who had any workshop tickets
they were not planning to use were encouraged to take them to the "Ticket
Exchange" area on the mezzanine level of the Commonwealth Convention
Center, the site of the Gathering.

Those scheduled to sign books were presenters -- Jane Dempsey Douglass,
Clifton Kirkpatrick, Sylvia Thorsen-Smith, Renita Weems, and Miriam Therese
Winter; planners -- Jane Parker Huber and Betsy Lunz. Another author, Duke
Robinson, attended the gathering by special arrangement. Many authors who
are at the Gathering in another capacity also signed their books Thursday

Later that evening, the Louisville Youth Choir performed during the
evening plenary concert. Dr. Renita J. Weems, associate professor of Old
Testament studies at Vanderbilt University Divinty School in Nashville,
Tenn., was the evening plenary keynote speaker.
