JULY 30, 1997, SUICIDE BOMBING IN JERUSALEM MARKET
Statement by the Rev. Dr. Joan B. Campbell
General Secretary, National Council of Churches

We are sickened by the July 30 terrorist attack in the
Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem.  We always are horrified
by violence of this type.  We have repeatedly condemned such
acts, and we condemn this one.  Violence begets more
violence.  We regret any attempt to disrupt the non-violent
political processes, and hope that none of the parties will
use this terrible act as pretext for withdrawing from the
hard tasks of negotiation.  We pray for the families whose
loved ones died, and for the recovery of the injured.  Our
commitment to peace with justice, shared by people of faith
around the world, remains unshaken.
