Task force explores pension and health
coverage challenges, compares benefits

                 by United Methodist News Service

The Benefits 2000 Task Force of the United Methodist Board of
Pension and Health Benefits progressed toward its analysis of the
future of employee benefit programs within the denomination Aug.
15-16 in Rosemont, Ill.
The group began developing a policy statement to guide the
design of future United Methodist clergy and employee benefit
programs. It discussed various challenges central to the current
program, including funding for benefits programs in the future and
the aging clergy population.
The task force also compared retirement benefits provided
under the United Methodist Ministerial Pension Plan with benefits
provided by pension plans of five other mainline religious
denominations in the U.S.
Established by the agency's board of directors, the task
force is to evaluate the adequacy, costs and challenges associated
with the employee benefit programs of the United Methodist Church,
and make recommendations to the board of directors in 1998 in
preparation for the 2000 General Conference session.
The task force's next meeting is set for Sept.23, 1997.
