LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Larry L. Rasmussen, winner of the 1997 Grawemeyer Award in
Religion for his book "Earth, Community, Earth Ethics," will speak at 7
p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the School of Music on the campus of the
University of Louisville. Rasmussen is the Reinhold Neibuhr professor of
social ethics at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He received
the $150,000 Grawemeyer prize in April. The prize is presented jointly by
the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and the University of
Louisville. Rasmussen is the seventh recipient of the Grawemeyer Award in
Religion.
PITTSBURGH--Carnegie Samuel Calian, president and professor of theology at
Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, has returned from delivering the Founder's
Day Lectures at the Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary (PCTS) in
Seoul, Korea. PCTS is the largest Presbyterian theological institution in
the world, with 2,400 students. Calian spoke on the importance of the
Christian witness within a global business society. He also addressed the
Korean Christian Academy of Management.
DECATUR, Ga.--"Me? Write a Book? Why Not?" is the subject of a workshop
slated for Sept. 18-20 at Columbia Theological Seminary. The Rev. Cecil
Murphey, a Presbyterian minister and the author of 66 books, will lead the
continuing education seminar. Topics to be addressed include the
importance of rewriting, six or seven ways to figure out a publisher,
dynamite book proposals and getting happily edited. The cost is $80 plus
housing.
AUSTIN, Texas--Professor of Old Testament Andrew Dearman has been appointed
as acting academic dean for Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary for
the 1997-98 academic year, according to President Robert M. Shelton.
Dearman joined the Austin faculty in 1982, having previously served as an
assistant professor at Louisiana State University. He is an experienced
archaeological researcher, scholar and writer, and he serves on the
editorial board of the "Journal of Biblical Literature."
RICHMOND, Va.--A workshop exploring the practical and spiritual aspects of
clergy retirement will be presented Oct. 6-8 on the campus of Union
Theological Seminary in Virginia and Presbyterian School of Christian
Education. Sponsored by the school's Office of Professional Development,
the workshop will address retirement issues such as when and how to "say
good-bye," the celebration of closure in the context of worship and the
continuation of "call" after retirement. Edward A. White, senior
consultant for the Alban Institute in Bethesda, Md., will facilitate.
Tuition is $165.
