CONCORD, N.C.--The trustees of the Carrie E. & Lena V. Glenn Foundation 
have awarded the general education program at Barber-Scotia College a 
$7,500 grant. The grant will be used for the fall 1997 semester. The 
general education program will consist of a director and five faculty 
members who will assist students in their core academic program the first 
two years of their college education. 
 
ELKINS, W.Va.--The board of trustees of Davis & Elkins College announced 
that a $3 million grant has been received for a new athletic/physical 
education center from JSM Charitable Trust of St. Louis, Mo. Architectural 
planning will begin immediately. This is the second phase of a three-phase 
program designed to upgrade and expand the college's athletic facilities. 
Gates Tower, the first phase of the project, is currently under 
construction and is scheduled to open in August at the beginning of the 
1997- 98 academic session. 
 
PIKEVILLE, Ky.--Pikeville College recently received a $25,000 grant from 
The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation of Princeton, N.J. In addition, the 
Newcombe Foundation recently announced grants totaling $280,000 to provide 
Newcombe Scholarships at 14 institutions of higher education  related to 
the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). As with Pikeville College, the colleges 
selected serve populations of minority and/or economically disadvantaged 
students and have limited resources available for scholarship aid. 
 
BLOOMFIELD, N.J.--Dr. Ilona H. Anderson has been appointed vice president 
for academic affairs and dean of faculty at Bloomfield College. Anderson 
assumed office July 1 and is responsible for all aspects of curriculum, 
instruction and faculty development. She succeeds Dr. Maureen Grant, who 
held this post since 1989 and retired this past May. Anderson earned her 
B.S. degree in English education at New York University, her M.A.T. at 
Harvard University, and an Ed. M. and Ed.D. in communication from Teachers 
College, Columbia University. Her disciplinary interests include 
intercultural communication, literacy, standardized testing and the effects 
of media on minority youth. 
 
MONMOUTH, Ill.--Monmouth College has received a $100,000 grant from the 
Caterpillar Foundation of Peoria to establish a scholarship program and 
improve computer technology on campus. Part of the grant will be used to 
establish the Caterpillar Excellence Fund Scholars program, which will 
provide four three-year scholarships to qualified minority and nonminority 
students who attend the college. The remainder of the grant will be used to 
enhance the college's technology in two ways. Part of the money will help 
the college complete construction of a technology and computer lab in 
McMichael Academic Hall to be used primarily by students studying 
accounting, business and economics. The remainder of the grant will enhance 
the curriculum in the department of mathematics and computer science by 
purchasing distributed-display software for one of the department's 
computer labs.
