Dr. Addie Butler Retains Lead After Second Ballot for Vice President

DR. ADDIE BUTLER RETAINS LEAD
AFTER SECOND BALLOT FOR VICE PRESIDENT

     PHILADELPHIA (ELCA)   Dr. Addie J. Butler of Philadelphia retained
her first-place standing after the second ballot in voting Saturday for
vice president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
     Butler received 208 of 1,013 votes cast.  To be elected, however, 760
votes were required.  She had garnered at least 105 votes on the first --
or nominating -- ballot Saturday morning.
     The third ballot, which will be taken Sunday morning, will list seven
names for the unpaid office.  Those who will be on that ballot, and the
number each received on the second ballot, are Dr. Cynthia Jurisson,
Chicago, 126; Myrna Sheie, Anoka, Minn., 112; Terry Bowes, Longmont, Colo.,
87; Deborah S. Yandala, Akron, Ohio, 68; Barbara Day, Sioux Falls, S.D.,
58; and Lorrie Bergquist, Issaquah, Wash., 47.
     The ELCA is electing a first-term vice president this year.  Kathy J.
Magnus, vice president for the past six years, has announced her
resignation from the post effective at the end of the assembly.  A final
election is not expected before Monday.
