LWF launches Endowment Fund

HONG KONG, July 25, 1997 (lwi) - The Lutheran World Federation launched its
Endowment Fund during the July 13 Eucharist celebrating the 50th
anniversary of the LWF. Last September the LWF Council agreed to establish
the fund.

About US $9,000 was received for the Fund in the Eucharist offering.
In his report to the Assembly LWF General Secretary Ishmael Noko said that
"in the last few years the international work of the church has been
subjected to very difficult financial realities...." He appealed to all
member churches "to do their utmost to support this initiative and vision."

Christina Rogestam, LWF treasurer, underlined the need for the Endowment
fund in her report to the Assembly. "The uncertainty of the financial
possibilities of member churches - very often also beyond their own control
- calls for additional instruments to stabilize the finances of the
Federation," she said.

She reported that the last seven years has been a "tough and challenging"
time for financing with budgets developed under difficult conditions.
