USAID grants $2.98 million to
build library at Africa University

by United Methodist News Service

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- United Methodist-related Africa University in Zimbabwe has
received a $2.98 million grant from a U.S. government agency to build a
library.
The Rev. Roger Ireson, top executive for the United Methodist Board of Higher
Education and Ministry, announced during the recent Africa University
Development Committee meeting, that on Sept. 8, the Office of American Schools
and Hospitals Abroad of the United States Agency for International
Development (ASHA-USAID) signed an agreement to give the agency $2.98 million
to begin construction of a library. The agreement was signed by Mable Meares,
deputy director of ASHA-USAID and Ken Yamada, staff executive in the United
Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry in Washington, D.C.
The Africa University Development Committee works with the university
development office in Nashville, Tenn., and with affiliated governing and
promotional agencies of the United Methodist Church to raise money for the
schools capital, endowment and operational needs.
Money from USAID will cover the cost of architectural and engineering work,
building construction, furniture and equipment. The grant does not cover the
purchase of books, periodicals, microfilm, audiovisual materials and other
library devices.
Construction of the two-story, 29,000 square-foot library is expected to begin
in spring 1998 and be completed by spring 2000. It will contain a computer and
language laboratories, seminar rooms and the universitys archives.
This grant is the second given by ASHA-USAID to the United Methodist
Board of Higher Education and Ministry for construction at Africa University.
In 1990, ASHA-USAID provided $1.6 million to construct the Ireson/Kurewa
Center for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Humanities.
According to a report by the government agency, the Ireson/Kurewa Center
and the library are "two key components in the universitys long-term plan to
develop a regional center to train agricultural educators and carry out
research for the region."
The partnership between the board and the government agency is producing
powerful and positive results, said Yamada. "Africa University is an example
of what we can do together to improve not only economic and living standards,
but also human conditions through increased higher education opportunities and
access."
