    Stated Clerk to Keynote Washington Office Seminar

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--General Assembly stated clerk the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick 
will kick off an Oct. 12-14 briefing in Washington, D.C., entitled "Faith 
and America's Response to International Affairs."  The briefing is 
sponsored by the Presbyterian Washington Office as part of its 50th 
anniversary celebration. 
 
    Kirkpatrick, the former director of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) 
Worldwide Ministries Division, will speak on "Today's Global Dynamics: The 
Church's Role and Responsibility." 
 
    Following his address, briefing participants will hear from 
Presbyterian members of Congress, Washington Office issue specialists and 
other national spokespersons concerning current U.S. policy affecting 
international affairs. 
 
    Specific discussion topics will include international human rights, 
global environmental concerns, religious persecution, trade, sweatshops and 
forced labor, NATO expansion, U.S. multilateralism (particularly the United 
Nations and the Pentagon) and regional conflicts in the Middle East and 
Africa. 
 
    On the last day of the briefing, participants will hear from the Rev. 
Curtis Kearns, director of the National Ministries Division, on how 
Presbyterians can develop political strength in their communities. 
Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a dialogue on how 
grassroots networking can influence public policy.  Special focus will be 
given to a discussion between Washington Office staff and participants on 
how the Washington Office can equip and assist presbyteries/congregations 
with their social justice ministries. 
 
    The registration fee for the three-day briefing is $100 plus the cost
