United Methodists join in
Day of Conscience events

WASHINGTON (UMNS) -- At malls and college campuses around the nation United
Methodists joined others Oct. 4 in launching an campaign to help consumers
make shopping choices that discourage child labor and sweatshop abuses.
The Day of Conscience saw United Methodists rally with members of other
religious groups as well as unions and civil rights organizations to call for
an end to such practices which victimize children and their families.
Activities included protest rallies, vigils, candlelight marches, leafleting,
religious services, demonstrations, street theater and other events.
All were part of launching the Holiday Season of Conscience which will
continue through Christmas.
The campaign includes a petition drive directed to U.S. government that says
in part, "We do not want U.S.-based multinationals pitting the U.S. worker
against the poor in the developing world in a race to the bottom competing
over who will accept the lowest wages and benefits and the most miserable
working conditions."
Both the United Methodist Board of Church and Society and the Women's
Division of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries are among the more
than 100 organizations that have endorsed the campaign.
In a related event, the Rev. Pharis J. Harvey, a United Methodist missionary
and executive director of the International Labor Rights Fund, was recognized
by the United Methodist Board of Church and Society at its board meeting Oct.
4 for his leadership in campaigns against child labor and his efforts for the
rights of all workers.
