United Methodist Communications
offers religious journalism awards
NASHVILLE, (UMNS) - Two annual academic awards for study in religious
journalism - one graduate and one undergraduate - are being offered by
United Methodist Communications for the 1998-99 academic year.
The $6,000 Stoody-West Fellowship is given for graduate study in journalism.
It will assist a Christian engaged in religious journalism or one planning to
enter the field.
The fellowship recognizes the contributions of the Rev. Arthur West and the
late Ralph Stoody, leaders in United Methodist public relations and news.
Stoody retired in 1964 and died in 1979. West retired in 1975 and today
resides in Lebanon, Ohio.
Given for graduate study at an accredited school or department of journalism,
the award is made to enhance the recipients professional competence and to
help perpetuate high standards exemplified by both Stoody and West. Religious
journalism is interpreted to include audio-visual, electronic and print media.
The $2,500 Leonard M. Perryman Communications Scholarship for Ethnic Minority
Students is designed to aid U.S. ethnic minority college students who will be
juniors or seniors and who intend to pursue a career in religious
communication.
The scholarship is named in honor of the late Leonard M. Perryman, a
journalist for the United Methodist Church for more than 30 years. He died in
1983.
The purpose of the stipend is to enable the recipient to continue studies in
communication and promote excellence at the undergraduate level.
The term "communication" applies to cover such media as audio-visual,
electronic and print. Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited institution
of higher education.
Completed applications for both programs are due Feb. 15. For application
forms and additional information, contact: Fellowship Committee, United
Methodist Communications, Public Media Division, P.O. Box 320, Nashville,
Tenn. 37202-0320.
