Bombing fails to deter Belfast Mission
from outreach into the 21st century

By Kathleen LaCamera*

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (UMNS) -- Demonstrating its faith in the Northern
Ireland peace process and the strength of its 150 strong congregation, the
Methodist Belfast Central Mission has opened its new Grosvenor House in the
heart of Belfast.
The new building replaces a 103 year-old structure which had to be torn down
after it sustained damage from no less than 34 bombings in 25 years resulting
from the on-going "troubles" in the region.
Superintendent minister, the Rev. David Kerr says the new Grosvenor House is
designed to take the Mission's outreach into the 21st century by providing
space for worship, community service, meetings and training. The
$2.9 million project also includes a coffee shop and special facilities for
young people. Nearly $2 million already has been raised over a period of
eight years from individuals, charities and the United Methodist Board of
Global Ministries which designated Grosvenor House one of its Advance Specials
in 1996.
Among those attending the opening on Sunday, September 27th were the Catholic
Lord Mayor of Belfast as well as leaders from the Anglican and Presbyterian
churches. A ten- member delegation from the United Methodist Church
representing the Northeast Jurisdiction Urban Network was also present. The
Jurisdiction has had special links with the mission since 1993. Advance
number for those wishing to make contributions is 012007-3AN.
