University of Tennessee chosen as site
for 1999 national youth gathering

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS)-- Youth 99, a national gathering of United Methodist
youth and their leaders, is planned July 28-August 1, 1999 at the University
of Tennessee in Knoxville.
     The five-day event, sponsored by the United Methodist Board of
Discipleship, is held every four years and seeks to cultivate a sense of
Methodist identity among youth and encourage leadership development.
 	According to Corrine Van Buren, design team manager, the youth event will be
held for the first time in the churchs Southeastern Jurisdiction. More than
8,000 youth and their leaders are expected to attend. 
The meeting will seek to help youth understand that boldness is needed when
responding to Gods call, Van Buren said. Planned as a "high-energy" event,
she said, Youth 99 will accept youth where they are in the faith and help
them come to an experience of Gods grace in community.
The last national gathering in August 1995 at Salt Lake City attracted more
than 4,000 participants. 
Youth 99 will include speakers, concerts, Bible study, worship services,
learning and service opportunities, all designed to help young people grow
spiritually and become more effective leaders in the homes, churches and
communities.
