Nebraska communicator completes new
UMCom Conference Resource Team

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - The employment of Nebraska communicator Barbara
Nissen completes a new three-member United Methodist Communications (UMCom)
Conference Resource Team.
The team, which replaces five jurisdictional field staff, will be based here.
Its goal is to offer connections for annual conferences, according to the
Rev. Steve Horswill-Johnston, team director.
These connections, he explained, are to the staff and resources of United
Methodist Communications and to expertise in other annual conferences and the
secular arena. "Our goal is to make sure that annual conferences find the
people and resources they need to have an effective communications ministry,"
he said.
Horswill-Johnston is former media specialist for the California-Pacific
Annual Conference.
Announced earlier was the employment of Deborah Jarrett as administrative
assistant for the team. For 12 years Jarrett has been administrative
assistant to United Methodist News Service, a unit of UMCom.
Nissen will be a "Network Specialist" who will listen to the needs of the
conferences and suggest resources including creative expertise and financial
support. She has been director of communications for the Nebraska Annual
Conference since August 1994. In that role she performed a wide range of
communications tasks including written, verbal, computer, video, crisis
communication, newspaper editing, brochure development, public speaking,
teleconferencing, radio, television, news media relations, budget
interpretation, and working with conference boards, commissions, committees
and agencies.
Prior to working with the Nebraska Conference, Nissen served as program
developer and trainer for a drug prevention center in Lincoln. She also had
served as community organizing director for the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse
Council of Nebraska and public relations director of Doane College, Crete,
Neb.
The new Conference Resource Team can be reached through a new toll-free
telephone number: (888)CRT-4UMC.
