Communicators honor best
in church communications
MESA, Ariz. (UMNS) —- Certificates of merit in more than 50 categories
honored the work of the denomination’s professional communicators here Oct. 24
when the United Methodist Association of Communicators (UMAC) distributed its
1997 awards.
Eight "Awards of Excellence" plaques were given to top winners in the major
categories. The awards represented the best overall work in a particular class
or division.
The Donn Doten Award of Excellence for Writing was given to Andy Ellis,
editor of the Alabama-West Florida Christian Advocate.
The Leonard M. Perryman Award for Excellence in Special Promotion went to
Shannon Martin and Ping Lau, both communications personnel in the Texas
Conference, for "It Makes Cents."
The Robert F. Storey Award for Excellence in Newspapers was received by John
Lovelace, Cynthia Astle, Diane Balay, Dan Gangler, Keith Head and Denise
Johnson Stovall —- for The United Methodist Reporter.
The Donald B. Moyer Award of Excellence in Photography went to Paul Jeffrey,
a missionary in Guatemala, for his photo "Witness from on the Scene Reporters:
Brazil."
The Award of Excellence for Magazines went to Terri Hiers, Bret Haines, Kathy
Gilbert —- all United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry staff
- for Orientation ’97. Judy Smith, Hiers, Haines and Gilbert also received the
Award of Excellence for Newsletters for Colleague.
The Award of Excellence for Artwork was given to Nancye Willis, marketing
specialist for United Methodist Communications, for the compact disc cover of
"Move On."
The Award of Excellence for Electronic Media went to Bill Wolfe, staff of
radio ministries at United Methodist Communications for "Move On."
Three additional categories -- video, television /cable and use of the
Internet -- received Program Chair Awards for the best overall work.
In the area of video, the Program Chair Award for Outstanding Achievement was
presented to Alan Griggs, media strategist for United Methodist
Communications, for United Methodist Television Spots.
The Program Chair Award for Outstanding Achievement for the best overall work
in television/cable was received by Wilford Bane, a United Methodist
Communications director, for "News Odyssey," a weekly religious cable news
program.
For best overall work in the Internet, the Program Chair Award for
Outstanding Achievement was given to Charles Cole, Nancy A. Carter and Tom
Madron for the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries’ Web site.
Conducted annually, the awards certificates and plaques for the competition
are presented at the association’s fall meeting. The Rev. Alvin J. Horton,
Richmond, Va., is UMAC president.
