CANADA: CHURCH FIGHTS ABUSE LAWSUITS
(Canadian Journal) Controversy over Church run native residential
schools could erupt again as the Anglican Church of Canada defends
itself against two lawsuits by former students.
The suits are the first filed against the Church because of its
connection with residential schools. In 1993, the Church apologised for
the detrimental effects of its role in residential schools. But it is
fighting these lawsuits because it says the federal government, not the
Church, ran the two institutions concerned.
