KERRVILLE, Texas--Schreiner College has broken ground for its new Floyd and
Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center. The ceremony honored the Cailloux
family, who donated $6.4 million for the center's planning and
construction. The family's gift was given in memory of the late Floyd
Cailloux, a Houston business leader, philanthropist, and Schreiner trustee,
and as a tribute to his wife, Kathleen. The center will be a
state-of-the-art hub that will serve students as well as the community,
according to college officials. A Schreiner College committee that includes
students, faculty, and administrators will be conducting an assessment of
specific needs that the activity center must meet.
CLARKSVILLE, Ark.--Rick D. Niece was inaugurated recently as 24th president
of the University of the Ozarks in a ceremony that highlighted numerous
campus activities. Niece, who was selected to lead the 164-year-old
institution in April, began his duties June 26. A graduate of Ohio State
University, from which he received a bachelor of science degree with majors
in English and speech, Niece obtained his master's degree and Ph.D. from
Kent State University, also in Ohio. He and his wife, Sheree, moved to
Clarksville from North Canton, Ohio, where Niece served as interim
president of Walsh University.
STAUNTON, Va.--Former U.S. poet laureate Rita Dove has designated an award
of $50,000 to be donated to Mary Baldwin College's program for gifted
girls. Dove was one of four women to receive this year's Frontrunner Award
from the Sara Lee Foundation. The foundation donated $50,000 to each woman,
who in turn donated the money to a nonprofit organization of her choice.
Dove, who served as poet laureate of the United States from 1993 to 1995,
is the Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia. Her
daughter, Aviva, is a first-year student in Mary Baldwin's Program for the
Exceptionally Gifted (PEG). Dove provided the $50,000 to increase the
number of minority children in the PEG program.
