ALMA, Mich.--The science initiative in Alma College's Cherished Ever
Capital Campaign has raised more than $4 million in gifts and pledges for
science equipment. Approximately $1 million has been designated for current
equipment needs; the remaining funds, over $3 million, go into Alma's
endowment to generate income for maintenance and future equipment needs. In
addition to gifts designated for equipment and endowment, a generous
contribution of $500,000 from the C.S. & Marion F. McIntyre Foundation
constituted the naming gift for the new McIntyre Center for Exercise and
Health Science. A $60,000 grant from the Matilda R. Wilson Fund will allow
Alma to renovate and improve the laboratory at the college's 200-acre
ecological station used by the biology department.

SWANNANOA, N.C.--The Janirve Foundation, a private foundation in Asheville,
N.C., has announced it will make a grant of $250,000 for construction of a
new science facility at Warren Wilson College. The facility will be a
20,000-square-foot lab and office space serving 40 percent of Warren Wilson
students, who major in the sciences and environmental studies. It will be
connected to the existing Morse and Bannerman Halls, which will be
renovated after the new construction has been completed. Plans call for a
central courtyard to be constructed between the new and renovated
buildings. The entire complex, consisting of about 40,000 square feet upon
completion, is being designed to provide for the science program for
decades to come.

HAMDEN-SYDNEY, Va.--Hamden-Sydney College has significantly expanded its
Merit Scholarship Program. The college plans to enroll 50 merit scholars in
next year's freshman class. Merit scholarships fall into three categories:
the Allan Scholarships provide annual grants of $15,000; the Venable
Scholarships, annual grants of $11,250; and the Patrick Henry Scholarships,
annual grants of $7,500. All grants are made without regard to demonstrated
need. If a Merit Scholarship recipient demonstrates additional need, it is
met from other sources. Further information may be obtained by calling the
college admissions office at (804) 223-6346.

MONMOUTH, Ill.--The Edward Arthur Mellinger Foundation, Inc., of Monmouth
will provide $500,000 over the next four years to establish a
state-of-the-art learning center on the Monmouth College campus, according
to college officials. The learning center, along with one or more of the
college's humanities departments, will be housed in the former Alpha Tau
Omega House, a college-owned property located at 320 N. Seventh St. The
center will include space for workshops on topics such as writing research
papers, public speaking, improving grammar skills and use of the Internet
for research. The building will be equipped with advanced technology that
will allow specialized training by a number of departments. Faculty and
trained student assistants will also use the facility to develop programs
and software for students with special educational needs. Renovation will
begin in the spring or summer of 1998.
