FOUR ELCA MEMBERS HONORED

Four members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America were honored for their contributions to
church and society by The Luther Institute.  The
four honorees were the Rev. Dr. Yoshiro Ishida,
president of the newly-established Kyushu Lutheran
College, Kumamoto, Japan; the Rev. Dr. Conrad
Bergendoff, a 102 year old educator and former
president of Augustana College (one of 28 colleges
and universities associated with the ELCA),
Rock Island, Ill.; the Rev. Dr. George W. Forell,
professor emeritus of religion at the University
of Iowa; and Mr. Norman M. Lorentzsen, retired
president and chief executive officer of
Burlington Northern Inc., and an active church and
community volunteer.  At an awards gala Nov. 18
each honoree was presented with a bronze sculpture
entitled, "Luther at Wittenberg," created
especially for the eighth presentation of the
Wittenberg Awards.  The sculpture depicts Martin
Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the Castle Church
door at Wittenberg in 1517.  Luther was a 16th
century German church reformer.  The Luther
Institute is an inter-Lutheran educational
organization based in the nation's capitol
dedicated to "the church's presence in ministry
and witness in those places where the country's
decision makers think and work."
