Presbyterians Make Up 10 Percent of the U.S. Congress

         Presbyterians Make Up 10 Percent of the U.S. Congress

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--According to the U.S. Congressional Yellow Book, 10 
percent of the members of the 105th Congress of the United States identify 
themselves as Presbyterian. 
 
    The tally lists 45 U.S. House of Representative members and 10 members 
of the U.S. Senate as Presbyterian.  The directory does not indicate 
whether those declaring themselves Presbyterian are members of the 
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). 
 
    Of the 55 Presbyterians in Congress, 38 are Republicans and 17 are 
Democrats.  Presbyterian Republicans outnumber their Democrat counterparts 
30-15 in the House and 8-2 in the Senate. 
 
    U.S. House of Representatives members identifying themselves as 
Presbyterian are Dick Armey, R-Texas; Bill Barrett, R-Neb.; Ken Bentsen, 
D-Texas; Richard Burr, R-N.C.; Charles Canady, R-Fla.; Eva Clayton, D-N.C.; 
Howard Coble, R-N.C.; Diana DeGette, D-Colo.; John J. Duncan Jr., R-Tenn.; 
Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo.; Bobby R. Etheridge, D-N.C.; Porter J. Goss, R-Fla.; 
Jim Greenwood, R-Pa.; Tony P. Hall, D-Ohio; Joel Hefley, R-Colo.; Van 
Hilleary, R-Tenn. 
 
    And Bob Inglis, R-S.C.; Jay Johnson, D-Wis.; Sue W. Kelly, R-N.Y.;
