Cambodians among new group
commissioned as missionaries
by United Methodist News Service
Four Cambodians returning to work in their native country are among a group
of missionaries newly commissioned by the United Methodist Board of Global
Ministries.
The board made several new assignments and recognized some previously
commissioned missionaries during a December service in Atlanta.
The Rev. Joseph Chhleav Chan and Marilyn Sovann Chan of the California-Nevada
Annual Conference are assigned to ministries of evangelism and church growth,
and Pitou and Sally Lao, California-Pacific Conference, will work in church
development.
Other new missionaries include Mary Parker Ghartey and the Rev. Samuel
Quamina Ebenezer Ghartey, South Georgia Conference. They have been assigned to
the Bahamas District of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas
as a teacher and a pastor, respectively. Both are natives of Ghana.
The Rev. William James and Maria Humbane, natives of Mozambique, will serve
in Zimbabwe. He will be a professor at Africa University, and she will work
with church and community ministries. Mbwizu Ndjungu, Southern Congo (formerly
Zaire) Conference, is assigned to ministries with women, children and health
in Dakar, Senegal.
The Rev. Bruce William Griffith Jr., Western Pennsylvania Conference, will
teach English in Central Asia. The Rev. Robert J. Walters, South Indiana
Conference, will serve as director of Likasi School of Theology in the
Democratic Republic of Congo. Cornelia Marie Wieck, Illinois Great Rivers
Conference, is assigned to Wesleyan Girls' High School in Taipei, Taiwan.
Previously commissioned missionaries recognized during the service were
Veronica Barrell, Virginia Conference, assignment pending; the Rev. Frank and
Carolyn Horton, Kentucky Conference, assignment pending to Sierra Leone; and
William and Jerri Savuto, North Texas Conference, assigned to Maua Methodist
Hospital in Maua, Kenya. William Savuto also will be an instructor at Kenya
Methodist University there.
Commissioning marks the successful completion of preparation and training at
the Mission Resource Center in Atlanta. The center is a cooperative effort of
the Board of Global Ministries, the Interdenominational Theological Center and
Candler School of Theology at Emory University.
