The Association of Presbyterian Church Educators (APCE) has announced
that the Rev. David R. Lewis has been chosen as the recipient of the
association's Life Achievement Award.
He will be given the award at APCE's upcoming annual convention, Feb. 4-7
in Boston.
Lewis has had a long and distinguished career as an educator in the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), most recently as associate for men's
ministry. He is currently on the board of directors of the American Men's
Studies Association.

The Rev. Lee V. Kliewer, 86, a pastor in California and for 17 years
the stated clerk of the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii, died Dec.
1 in Pasadena.
Kliewer, the son of a Mennonite pastor, was born in Newton, Kan. He
graduated from Occidental College and Princeton Theological Seminary and
was ordained in 1941. He was a United States Air Force chaplain before
serving pastorates in California. In addition to his service as synod
stated clerk, he served as stated clerk of the former Los Angeles
Presbytery.
A memorial service was held Dec. 7 at Grandview Presbyterian Church in
Glendale. Kliewer is survived by his wife, Grace; two sons, the Rev. Mark
Kliewer and Gary Kliewer; a grandson, Jonathan; a sister, Orpha Welch; a
brother-in-law, Paul Forman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rev. James V. Johnson Jr., 69, one of the foremost stewardship
educators in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and a candidate for moderator
of the General Assembly in 1989, died Dec. 12 in Savannah, Ga.
Johnson, a native of Memphis, graduated from Princeton University and
Princeton Theological Seminary. He served churches in Florida, Mississippi
and Georgia as pastor and also served as secretary of stewardship for the
former Presbyterian Church in the United States. Throughout his career,
Johnson was active at all levels of the denomination, most recently, in the
early 1990s, as chair of a special General Assembly committee seeking to
achieve a more cooperative relationship between the denomination and the
Presbyterian Lay Committee.
Johnson is survived by his wife, Lobenta; a son, James V. Johnson III
of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Jane, of Albuquerque, N.M.; and twin
grandsons. Memorial services were held Dec. 15 at First Presbyterian
Church of Columbus, Ga., where Johnson served as pastor from 1971-93, and
at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church in Savannah, Ga., where he served as
interim pastor and then parish associate after his retirement.

The Rev. Patricia Ray Case, 38, for seven years the associate editor of
"The Disciple," the magazine of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),
has been named the 15th editor of that 134-year-old magazine.
Case, who will be the first woman editor of "The Disciple," is
succeeding Robert L. Friedly, who is retiring after 32 years in Disciples
communication roles. A native of Kingfisher, Okla., she has won numerous
awards in her writing career.

The New Mexico Conference of Churches has named the Rev. Lewis Wilkins
Jr. the winner of its Ecumenical Pioneer Award. The award was presented to
Wilkins Dec. 6.
Wilkins, who is stated supply pastor of First Presbyterian Church in
Lovington, N.M., has had a long career of ecumenical service. He has
served on the staff of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Geneva
and has also served as coopted staff for the World Council of Churches.
For 23 years he was a member of the Presbyterian delegation to the
Consultation on Church Union (COCU) and is currently on the board of
directors of the New Mexico Conference of Churches.
