United Methodist Communications offering
first Racial Ethnic Minority Fellowship
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) – United Methodist Communications is accepting
applications for the agency's first Racial Ethnic Minority Fellowship.
The full-time, salaried, one-year fellowship will be given to a recent college
or seminary graduate for a 12-month period beginning July 1, 1998. Deadline
for applications is March 30, 1998.
The fellowship aims to correct the under-representation of ethnic minorities
serving as communicators in the church's U.S. annual (regional) conferences,
according to the Rev. Steve Horswill-Johnston, a staff executive with the
church's Nashville-based agency.
The fact that only four of the 66 conferences have ethnic-minority
communicators on staff "is clearly an inadequate response to the United
Methodist Church's stated commitment to inclusiveness," he said. "The lack of
such persons in communications leadership positions is not only a justice
issue, but it also robs our members of the opportunity to have communications
approaches which reflect the insights and experiences of persons from a
variety of backgrounds."
Ideally, applicants should have an educational background in communications
and an interest in exploring annual conference communications as a possible
career goal.
The fellowship will provide a salary of $30,000 plus benefits, moving
expenses and travel.
According to Horswill-Johnston, the recipient will be placed in one of the
church's annual conferences to work alongside an experienced communicator in a
variety of media. A stipend is being provided for the annual conference
communicator serving as a mentor to the fellowship recipient. The mentor will
serve on the search committee and participate in the development of a learning
contract.
Financial support for the new fellowship is coming from the Foundation for
United Methodist Communications.
