United Methodist-related educational 
institutions reward exemplary teachers

More than 80 United Methodist-related schools, colleges, and universities
received $500 each from the churchwide Board of Higher Education and Ministry
last fall to reward their teachers with Exemplary Teacher Awards.
The six-year-old award provides grants to United Methodist institutions to
honor individuals who exemplify excellence in teaching; civility and concern
for students and colleagues; and commitment to value-centered education, the
institution and the community.
The 10 large research universities connected to the churchwide agency also
received grants to recognize outstanding teaching and scholarship on their
campuses.
	"The awards are a major statement on the part of the church that we care
about good teaching," said Robert Armour, agency staff member.
The specific criteria for teaching awards are determined by each educational
institution, and each school chooses the winners and presents the awards
during the year. Certificates issued by the division are given to the winners
along with the monetary award.
