by Liz Nance
Synod of the Mid-Atlantic Office of Communication
RICHMOND, Va.--The Synod of the Mid-Atlantic Council and Synod Assembly
have approved the creation of a new Korean-American presbytery, the synod's
14th presbytery. The new presbytery is called the Atlantic Korean-American
Presbytery, serving Korean-American Presbyterian churches throughout the
synod.
The synod council appointed a 13-member "transitional council,"
including the Rev. Hyuan Chan Bae, pastor of Richmond Korean Presbyterian
Church, as council chair and presbytery moderator. Samuel K. Moak is
stated clerk of the new presbytery. The transitional council is composed
of nine Korean-American ministers and elders and four non-Korean members.
The council has developed a mission statement, goals, responsibilities,
organization and committee structure for the new presbytery.
A celebration service for the new presbytery was held at Richmond
Korean Presbyterian Church on Nov. 2. A dedication service for the new
presbytery office was held Nov. 8
Seventeen Korean Presbyterian churches in the synod are expected to
become charter members of the new presbytery within the next six months.
Many of them are in the process of transferring their membership to the new
presbytery now. Several new church developments are also expected to
become members of the new presbytery in the near future.
The offices of the Atlantic Korean-American Presbytery are at 3212
Cutshaw Ave., Suite 208, Richmond, VA 23230. The phone number is (804)
359-8779.
