Philander Smith College names
its first woman president

by United Methodist News Service

United Methodist-related Philander Smith College, a historically black
liberal arts institution in Little Rock, Ark., has named its first woman
president in the school's 120-year history.
Trudie Kibbe (Preciphs) Reed, 50, will take office as Philander Smith's 11th
president on July 1, the board of trustees announced on Jan. 22. Reed is
currently dean of the Leadership Institute and director of the graduate
program at United Methodist-related Columbia (S.C.) College.
"I believe that education is power, generating hope and faith in a better
tomorrow," Reed said. "Regardless of economic and social background, every
person deserves an opportunity to pursue higher education."
The value of a liberal arts education is its fostering of a "deep exploration
of human knowledge in diverse subjects that will facilitate inquiry into
meaning, while building a solid foundation for lifelong learning," she said.
Reed was chosen after a six-month search to succeed Myer L. Titus, who has
served as president since February 1988. He announced his retirement last May.
"Reed is a classic example of the right person at the right time in the
college's history," said Sherman Tate, chairman of the board of trustees for
Philander Smith College. She "comes. . .at a time when higher education
administration has changed and continues to change, to the extent that it
requires not only new energy and new thinking, but a new priority relating to
academic life in general."
Reed is currently director of the Leadership Studies Program at Columbia
College, and she is the founder and editor of an international leadership
journal, A Leadership Journal: Women in Leadership-Sharing the Vision.
A graduate of the University of Texas and Columbia University, N.Y., she has
considerable teaching experience at both the baccalaureate and master's
levels.
Reed previously served as the top executive in the United Methodist Church's
Commission on the Status and Role of Women and received the distinction at age
28 of being the youngest person elected to a general secretary position. She
also was a staff executive of the denomination's programming agency for 11
years. She has extensive experience as a college professor, human resource
development specialist, leadership consultant, fund raiser and writer.
Her teaching, scholarship and community service have gained international
recognition. Recently, she was voted the 1998 Outstanding Career Woman by the
city of Columbia, and she will be honored on March 5.
