DANVILLE, Ky.-Stephen E. Asmus, assistant professor of biology at Centre 
College, has received a research grant of $11,200 from the Kentucky Academy 
of Sciences. The grant is designated to encourage collaborative research 
between faculty and undergraduate students. Asmus has expertise in 
developmental neurobiology and will collaborate with Centre students in a 
study of neurons, neurotransmitters and certain types of tissues known as 
target issues. 
 
CHARLOTTE, N.C.-A $350,000 commitment has been made to Queens College by 
Dr. James Pressly Hamilton and his wife, Grey Hunter Hamilton. '62, to 
underwrite a $15,000 teaching award at Queens that will become one of the 
most prestigious honors that a faculty member can receive. The 
Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award seeks to recognize and honor 
professors at the school whose life and work inspire students to strive to 
reach their utmost potential. The award honors the memory of James' and 
Grey's parents. The monetary award will be divided between the recipient 
and an academic department or program of their choice. Winners will be 
chosen from nominations submitted by peers, students and Queens alumni/ae 
for having displayed an exemplary love of teaching. James and Grey Hamilton 
are alumni of Davidson and Queens Colleges, respectively. Their daughter 
Isabel is a 1992 graduate of Queens, and son Hunter is a Davidson alumnus. 
 
LAURINBURG, N.C.-DeTamble Library at St. Andrews Presbyterian College will 
receive a $250,000 grant from the Richard J. Reynolds III and Marie Mallouk 
Reynolds Foundation of Winston-Salem, N.C. The gift is the largest awarded 
to date by the relatively new foundation. One of the goals of the grant is 
to design an area on the second floor of the library to be designated as 
the R.J. Reynolds III Reading Room. The gift will also purchased titles in 
general areas not covered by departmental budgets, as well as global 
topics, social issues, American history and major news reference sets. 
Additionally, the library's automated catalog will be upgraded to online 
status. 
 
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.-Hampden-Sydney College has significantly expanded its 
merit scholarship program. The college plans to enroll 50 merit scholars in 
next year's freshman class. Merit scholarships fall into three categories: 
The Allan Scholarships provide annual grants of $15,000; the Venable 
Scholarships, annual grants of $11,250; and the Patrick Henry Scholarships, 
annual grants of $7,500. All grants are made without regard to demonstrated 
need. If a merit scholarship recipient demonstrates additional need, it is
