New fund-raising strategies
planned for churches

	New strategies for church fund-raising campaigns are being offered by a
section of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.
	Generally, staff members with the board's Office of Finance and Field Service
spend almost two weeks at churches of all sizes, directing "Every Member
Visitation" campaigns for annual budget fund raising, according to Joyce
Wilkerson, executive secretary. Besides securing large gifts from church
leaders, staff members train volunteers on ways to inspire other members to
pledge.
	An expanded strategy now will include alternate methods for gathering
financial pledges and the use of three campaign models complete with themes,
illustrative materials and activities for promoting stewardship. Two of the
models can be adapted to the needs of small churches and churches with
campaign goals under $100,000.
	Finance and Field Service averages 30 to 50 campaigns a year, many for
churches of 200 to 600 members. By recently doubling its field staff to eight,
the office hopes to serve up to 80 churches in 1998, Wilkerson said.
