Two More APCE Award Winners Announced
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Association of Presbyterian Church Educators (APCE)
has announced two additional award winners who will be honored at its
upcoming annual conference, Feb. 4-7, in Boston.
The Rev. Marvin Simmers will be honored as Educator of the Year and Jan
Noller will receive a Lifetime Achievement award. Noller joins the Rev.
David Lewis as a recipient of that award (see "NEWS BRIEFS," Jan. 16, 1998,
p. 15).
Simmers, a native of Massanetta Springs, Va., has served the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in a variety of Christian education-related
positions since 1977, currently as coordinator for pastor, educator and lay
leader support in the Christian Education Program Area of the
Congregational Ministries Division. A graduate of the Presbyterian School
of Christian Education and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, Simmers
also has served as a pastor. He holds a doctorate in education from the
University of Virginia.
Noller has been a Christian educator in a variety of capacities in the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) for more than 30 years. Serving churches in
Indiana, Oklahoma and Texas and as a presbytery staff member in South
Louisiana and Twin Cities Area presbyteries, Noller has created numerous
creative programs in Christian education and leadership development,
particularly for small churches. She has a degree in elementary education
and has co-authored a book designed for church Christian education
committees that is hot off the press.
