GENEVA, 26 March 1998 (lwi) - Member churches of the Lutheran World
Federation (LWF), this year again, are invited to celebrate a "Lutheran
Communion Sunday". The decision to initiate an "LWF Sunday" was originally
taken by the LWF Council at its meeting in Windhoek, Namibia in 1995. The
first celebration took place in Hong Kong on the occasion of the
federation's 50th anniversary.
Although the choice of content and date for the celebration by the member
churches is flexible, in his letter addressed to the churches this month,
LWF general secretary, Ishmael Noko, shows preference for a Sunday on or
around Reformation Sunday. The aim is to celebrate and foster the Lutheran
Communion. The annual celebrations should focus on worship and, in the
future, as recommended by the Council in Namibia, be prepared by a member
church in one of the seven regions for the entire Lutheran Communion.
For this year's celebration, liturgical materials, among others, will be
prepared and sent by the LWF secretariat in Geneva to the congregations for
the celebration worship service.
