PBS series on addiction
marks start of campaign
WASHINGTON (UMNS) -- The upcoming "Moyers on Addiction: Close to
Home" PBS series is part of a nationwide campaign on the issue of
addiction.
April 1 -- the day after the series ends -- is national Take a Step Day
to encourage Americans to learn about addiction. Various organizations
throughout the country are planning local events.
The three-day series starts March 29 (check listings).
The series is supported by a World Wide Web site called Close to Home
Online (http://www.pbs.org/closetohome). The site will include stories
about people in recovery, plus articles on the science and treatment of
addiction, illustrations, essays and editorials. It also will include a
resource section, an online comic book for teens and a bulletin board.
Six viewers' guides have been prepared, including a family guide in
English or Spanish. Other guides are designed for the general public,
corporations, health professionals, elementary schools and high schools.
A free copy may be ordered by sending a postcard, specifying the guide,
with your name and address to P.O. Box 245, Little Falls, NJ 07424-0245.
Permission to make copies is granted by the publisher.
Free off-air taping rights are available to educators for one year from
each broadcast.
The five-tape video series can be purchased from Films for the
Humanities and Sciences at (800) 257-5126.
Public Television Outreach Alliance has been coordinating these and
other activities related to the video broadcast.
