'Double Your Dollars' scholarship
program no longer accepting applicants
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) --Overwhelming response to "Double Your
Dollars" scholarship program of the United Methodist Foundation for
Christian Higher has prompted officials to stop accepting applications.
The Nashville-based foundation matches $1,000 for local
congregations that raise $1,000 for a member of the congregation
enrolled or planning to enroll in a United Methodist-related college,
university or seminary.
George Miller, president of the foundation which raises, manages
and distributes money to foster education in United Methodist-related
educational institutions, said 243 applications had been received by
March 17 for the 220 available scholarships for 1998.
"Applications and checks from local churches for our 1998
program have already exceeded our budget of $220,000," he said.
Miller said the foundation regrets having to return applications
but expressed confidence that the program will continue in 1999. "We
will look at expanding the program again," he said.
The matching scholarship program was established in 1997 to
award 100 scholarships. The number of scholarship was expanded to 220 in
1998.
