August leadership event
will prepare for 1999
by United Methodist News Service
Workshops on aging-related issues, an e-mail discussion group
and an August leadership training event are three ways in which Global
Action on Aging is addressing issues facing older people.
The training event, set for Aug. 27-30 at Scarritt-Bennett
Center in Nashville, is in preparation for the United Nations
International Year of Older Persons in 1999.
Participants will include leaders of United Methodist Women and
other denominational women's groups, Church Women United, the YWCA,
Junior League, Coalition of Labor Union Women, Zonta, National Council
of Women, Institute for Women and Work, and the Women's International
League for Peace and Freedom.
Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland and current U.N. high
commissioner for human rights, is the invited keynote speaker.
The Global Older Women's Network was launched on March 8,
International Women's Day. A worldwide discussion forum for aging
issues, it works through electronic mail, according to Corinna Lim,
Global Action on Aging intern.
"If you send one e-mail, it goes to the rest of the
participants," she explained.
Global Action on Aging also sends information of interest to
network participants, such as an article about Swedish widows who were
targeted for a sharp reduction in pension benefits.
The network is open to anyone interested in issues affecting
older women. Initial participants include women from Singapore,
Suriname, Haiti, Japan, India, the Netherlands, Ghana and Sweden.
To join, send an e-mail to majordomo@icg.org, with the following
words in the body of the message: subscribe globalwomen-agingnet.
Global Action on Aging also sponsors occasional forums at the
Church Center for the United Nations in New York. A briefing on Social
Development and Aging in February followed the United Nation's
Commission for Social Development session on aging issues. A May 1
seminar will focus on Older Persons and Work.
