LAURINBURG, N.C.-St. Andrews Presbyterian College recently strengthened its
mission as a college of the church and its ties to the Presbyterian Church
with the addition of Glenn T. Batten Jr., director of church relations.
Batten, a Presbyterian minster and 1990 St. Andrews graduate, began his
duties on Feb. 18. The new position is a cooperative effort among St.
Andrews Presbyterian College, the Synod of Mid-Atlantic, and the Presbytery
of Coastal Carolina. The synod and presbytery agreed to contribute $25,000
apiece to help fund the position. The funding covers salary and benefits,
as well as travel, programs, materials, and postage, and will continue for
three years. Two churches interested in establishing the position,
Lumberton Presbyterian and Fayetteville Presbyterian, also contributed.
SPOKANE, Wash.-In an act of generosity and support that could pave the way
for a new and needed classroom facility at Whitworth College, trustee and
alumnus John Scotford and his wife, Judy, recently announced their pledge
of a $1 million gift to his alma mater. While a final decision about how to
use the Scotford gift has not been made, it is likely that the gift will be
used to help fund a new classroom facility, which is the number-one
priority on the college's list of future capital projects, according to
Kristi Burns, vice president for institutional advancement.
DANVILLE, Ky.-A five-year comprehensive financial campaign by Centre
College has raised more than $76 million for endowment, scholarships, and
capital improvement projects. The Front and Centre Campaign, which began
early in 1993 and ended in December, surpassed its original goal by more
than $16 million. The campaign was the largest in Centre history and is
believed to be the largest ever undertaken by a Kentucky college or
university. According to campaign chair James Rouse of Versailles, Ky., a
Centre alumnus and trustee, the campaign total for donations and pledges
came to $76,129,827. Trustees and alumni accounted for nearly $55 million
on the total, with other support from corporations, foundations, and
friends of the college.
EASTON, Pa.-George Bush, the 41st president of the United States, will be
principal speaker at Lafayette College's 163rd Commencement on May 23. He
will receive an honorary doctor of law degree. Lafayette president Arthur
J. Rothkopf, who served as deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of
Transportation under Bush, said "[Bush] is a man of remarkable achievement
and personal courage. I am delighted that he will join the Lafayette
community as we celebrate the academic achievements of our students and
salute their families on commencement day."
