CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Johnson C. Smith University celebrated the 131st 
anniversary of its inception during Founder's Day on April 5 at the Jane M. 
Smith Memorial Church on campus. Keynote speaker was the Rev. McKinley 
Washington Jr., South Carolina state senator and pastor of Edisto 
Presbyterian Church in Edisto Island, S.C. Johnson C. Smith University 
(formerly Biddle Memorial Institute) was founded in 1867 by Presbyterian 
ministers the Rev. S.C. Alexander and the Rev. W.L. Miller. 
 
HASTINGS, Neb.-Five individuals will be inducted on April 21 as members of 
Hastings College's Pro Rege Society during a dinner and induction ceremony 
at Lochland Country Club in Hastings. To be inducted are Anne Batcheldor, 
Robert B. Daugherty, Walter D. Scott Jr. and Willis A. Strauss, all of 
Omaha, and Dr. Thomas Reeves of Denmark, S.C. Two of the honorees - 
Batchelder and Reeves - are active in the Presbyterian Church. Batchelder 
is active in Dundee Presbyterian Church in Omaha, Neb. Reeves was Hastings 
College president and is an ordained Presbyterian minister. Membership in 
the society is the highest nonacademic recognition that Hastings College 
can bestow. 
 
BATESVILLE, Ark.-The Lyon College board of trustees has selected Walter B. 
Roettger to be the 16th president in the college's 126-year history. 
Roettger came to Lyon from Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., where he 
currently serves as vice president of the college and dean of the faculty. 
Roettger will assume office on July 1. Until then, Dr. Ruth Schmidt, 
retired president of Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, and a member of the 
Lyon board of trustees, will continue to serve as interim president.
