Two professional chaplains' organizations will merge in May to create a
new association.

The Association of Professional Chaplains will unite the 3,300 members
of the College of Chaplains, based in Schaumburg, Ill., and the
Association of Mental Health Clergy in Knoxville, Tenn. The new
organization's headquarters will be in Schaumburg.

The merger is "the fulfillment of dreams long held by those who preceded
us. I believe God sent is to this time and to this place," said the Rev.
Richard Stewart, president of the college of chaplains and a director
in the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministries'
Section of Chaplains and Related Ministries,

United Methodists, he said, constitute a major portion of the leadership
of several pastoral care, counseling and education groups.
