Title: Jesus could not be cloned says Evangelical Alliance

For Immediate Release: 9th April 1998

There is no gene for God, so cloning Jesus Christ exactly would be
impossible, the Evangelical Alliance UK said today in response to
speculation about the likelihood of reproducing Christ from DNA
samples.

Responding to news of a film exploring the issue, Rev Dr David
Hilborn, Theological Secretary of the Evangelical Alliance UK, which
seeks to reflect the views of more than a million church-goers from
over 20 denominations, said:

"There are no genes or chromosomes for God. Divinity is what
distinguishes Jesus from the rest of us and divinity is not contained
in DNA."

Dr Hilborn added: " In Jesus divinity is united with humanity. If it
were ever remotely possible to clone Jesus from cells left behind
after his Resurrection you would be cloning a carpenter from Nazareth,
not the divine Son of God. In theory the clone might have family
characteristics just as Jesus' brothers and sisters would have had,
but that is all."
