Church of the Brethren National Youth Conference Daily Journal
July 28, 1998
What’s up -- A host of announcements, including do’s and don’ts
Before all else, write your name in your NYC booklet.
Morning Bible study, held Wednesday through Sunday from 7 to 7:30 a.m., will
be taught by Jim Myer, a free minister at White Oak Church of the Brethren,
Penryn, Pa. Myer is a former Annual Conference moderator and former NYC
speaker. He is a leader of Brethren Revival Fellowship.
Bible studiers can attend breakfast from 7:30-8:15 a.m.
Curfew, which is midnight, Mountain time, means being in your room with only
your roommate. It does not mean having guests, being in the hall, or
interacting with others through the window.
Announcement forms for Daily Insight are available in the NYC office. Articles
must be submitted by 8 a.m. to be considered for that evening’s edition.
A Partner Group Luncheon will be held Wednesday for each of the 71
congregations participating in the Partner Group ministry, which involves over
800 youth. Each participating congregation is invited to send five people. The
lunch will be from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Allison Cafeteria.
Attendance is mandatory for small groups and workshops. Small groups will meet
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; the NYC booklet lists meeting
locations.
Small group leaders are asked to turn in their attendance sheets immediately
following each meeting to Joe Hinish at the NYC office. Joe will be in the
office from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday to answer questions.
Workshop attendance is also mandatory for everyone, except for those on an
NYC-sanctioned hike or service project.
What’s where—NYC Office, bottom floor of Durrell Center; NYC information
booth, Moby Arena; NYC medical center, C wing of Corbett Hall, rooms 118 & 119
(medical staff will sit together during worship so they can be easily
located).
A Missile Silo Trip to protest buried missiles with David Radcliff will be
held from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Meet in the Towers Parking Lot at 3 p.m.
A group photo will be taken following Wednesday morning worship. Please sit by
congregations. People will file out of Moby Arena single file to walk to the
soccer fields. If your district has arranged to have a photo taken, you will
be given instructions of where to meet. Since the grass may be wet, bring
something to sit on. Pictures will be sold outside of Moby on Thursday and
Friday for $12.
Mail will be distributed each afternoon in the Exhibit Hall. While there,
check out the exhibits. Mail should be sent to—name, NYC 1998, Colorado State
University, Durrell Center, Ft. Collins CO 80523.
A volleyball tournament will be held this week for those who pre-registered.
Visit the Information Table for schedules and locations.
Want to play in the volleyball tournament? Two teams are needed to fill up the
80-team event. If interested, see Jeff Glass from 9:15 to 9:45 p.m. tonight at
the Information Booth in Moby Arena.
National Youth Cabinet members will wear a t-shirt from a different Brethren
college each day for easy spotability: La Verne or Brethren Colleges Abroad
(Wednesday), Juniata (Thursday), Manchester (Friday), and McPherson
(Saturday).
Red lanyards are being worn by NYC staff. Seek out staff members for
information or assistance or drop by the Information Booth.
Conference boundaries are Shields Avenue, Laurel Street, College Avenue, and
Pitkin Street. Crossing any of these roads classifies you as being off campus,
a bozo no-no. The only time you are allowed to leave campus is during
recreation and service projects time. To do so you must be accompanied by an
adviser, and you must have signed yourself out at the NYC Office.
H2O—drink lots of it! During recreation and worship times, water and ice will
be available behind the Recreation Center and Moby Arena.
Room keys must be with you at all times, even in the shower! Some residence
hall doors lock automatically when closed. NYCers will be charged 50 cents for
their doors to be unlocked.
Don’t even think about drinking water out of the sprinklers or the fountain,
or of taking the screens out of residence hall windows.
Recreation equipment will be available from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Recreational
Center. Go to the outside window on the south side. You must present your
lanyard as proof of being an NYCer.
Workshop changes—“Just Say No” is cancelled for Wednesday, but will be held
Saturday morning and afternoon in Ingersoll 9. The adviser workshop, “Making
Our Church a Safe Place,” has been moved to Lory 216.
Small Group meeting location changes—Group #112, meet in Clark A203; #277, at
the Moby volleyball court; #s 278, 279, and 280, at Moby’s outside concourse.
A custodian of the opposite sex may be assigned to your floor. Walk sparingly
caringly.
Personal checks can be cashed at the Lory Student Center bank, from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m., through Friday.
Gonna hike in the Rockies? Dress accordingly—it will be much cooler up there.
Long pants, hat, water bottle, sun screen, and walking shoes are recommended.

NYC Theme Song
This year’s NYC theme song, “With Eyes of Faith,” was written by Lee
Krahenbuhl, a well-known Brethren musician who is co-pastor at Skyridge Church
of the Brethren, Kalamazoo, Mich., and who is also an associate professor of
communication arts at Calvin College.
Lee, who also wrote the 1994 theme song, “Come to the Edge,” and who has
written several other songs and a play for special Brethren events, says the
writing of the “With Eyes of Faith” music came together quickly. Using II
Corinthians 5:7 as his scripture text, commissioned by the National Youth
Cabinet to write a song that ‘rocks,’ and inspired by his Scotch/ Irish
ancestry, Lee says the song possesses a driving beat that appropriately “seems
to move us toward the future.”
“The participants at NYC are the future of the Church,” Lee explains.
“There is this enormous wave of young people who are going to be our church
leaders. It gives me great hope for the future because I can see what lies
ahead. And I tried to reflect that in the song.”

Tonight's Worship
Paul Mundey, senior pastor of Frederick, Md, Church of the Brethren, will
deliver tonight’s sermon, titled “Gather . . . with Eyes of Faith.” Tonight’s
monetary offering will go toward the NYC scholarship fund, which this year
helped bring more than 80 youth from the United States, El Salvador, Puerto
Rico and Mexico to this, the 12th Church of the Brethren National Youth
Conference.
------------------
Wednesday
• The NYC group photo will be taken following morning worship.
• Work begins in the afternoon for the 1,400 NYCers who will participate in
the
construction of two Habitat houses, or on one of more than 30 service

• Wednesday evening’s offering will be used to collect eyeglasses, which
eventually will be sent to Latin America for people in need.
• A protest against U.S. missiles.
