A "HEADS UP" FOR ASIA BUREAUS COVERING NORTH KOREA:
Two Top U.S. Religious Agency Officials to be
Available Noon, Sept. 15, in Beijing
Following Their Food Aid Monitoring Visit to North
Korea
PLACE: The Swiss Hotel, Hong Kong Macau Center,
Beijing
WHO:
The Rev. Dr. Rodney Page, Executive Director of
Church World Service (CWS) and Associate General
Secretary of the National Council of the Churches of
Christ in the U.S.A. (NCC), with headquarters in New
York City. (CWS is the NCC's humanitarian response
ministry.)
The Rev. Canon J. Patrick Mauney, Director for
Anglican and Global Relations, The Episcopal Church,
also with New York City headquarters.
OCCASION:
The Revs. Page and Mauney will have spent Sept. 12-
13 in Pyongyang and Sept. 14 out in the provinces
monitoring distribution of CWS shipments of edible
oil and pulses consigned to the Korean Christians
Federation and World Food Program. They will seek
any updates on the expected effect of recent bad
weather on this year's crop yields. They have asked
to meet with high-ranking government officials about
U.S.-DPRK relations, but are unsure whether that
will be possible over the weekend. Church World
Service, which has a long history of contact with
North Korea, especially with the Korean Christians
Federation, has provided more than $2.8 million in
humanitarian assistance to North Korea since 1996,
including food, medicine, clothing, blankets, diesel
generators and greenhouses.
