Nearly 80 years after graduating from Georgia's Wesleyan College, an
alumna showed her love for the United Methodist-related women's
institution with a surprise gift of $1 million in stock.
Clara Carter Acree, 100, of Nashville, Tenn., gave the college a $1
million gift of Coca-Cola stock to fund an endowed teaching chair on
Nov. 6. She graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon in 1919.
The institution was notified of the gift by her son, Maurice M. Acree
Jr., of Nashville.
"We are thrilled and moved by Mrs. Acree's generous gift," said Nora
Kizer Bell, president of Wesleyan College. "It will add significantly to
the support of an excellent teaching faculty and continue to build
Wesleyan's academic reputation."
Acree's connection to the college exceeds her being an alumna. Her
brother-in-law was twice president of the institution, and her two
children served as mascots for the school.
