Historical Society Announces Publications Award Winners

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-At its recent meeting, the Presbyterian Historical Society
presented its four annual Presbyterian history-related publications awards.
William Oates Ragsdale received the Francis Makemie Award ($500) for
the best book-length contribution to Presbyterian or Reformed history for
his book "They Sought a Land: A Settlement in the Arkansas River Valley,
1840-1870" (University of Arkansas Press, 1997).
The Robert Lee Stowe Award ($250) for the best published historical
study of an American Presbyterian or Reformed congregation was given to
First Presbyterian Church, San Anselmo, Calif., for "Our Past: A Window to
the Future - A Centennial History of the First Presbyterian Church, San
Anselmo, 1897-1997," edited by Walter D. Davis (First Presbyterian Church,
1997).
A Stowe Award certificate of special commendation was presented to
First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for "In the Heart of the
City: A History of First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
1847-1997," by Allen Fisher and David Hay.
Ruth Crocker received the Patricia Ann Burrus Spaulding Award ($200)
for the best scholarly historical article pertaining to an American
Presbyterian or Reformed woman or women for "From Widow's Mite to Widow's
Might: The Philanthropy of Margaret Olivia Sage," published by the "Journal
of Presbyterian History" in its "American Presbyterians" series, Winter
1996.
The society awarded its Woodrow Wilson Award ($100) for the best
scholarly article in American Presbyterian or Reformed history to Moses N.
Moore Jr. for "Edward Wilmot Blyden: From Old School Presbyterian
Missionary to `Minister of Truth,'" published by the "Journal of
Presbyterian History," Summer 1997.
A Woodrow Wilson Award certificate of special commendation was given to
Marthname E. Sanders III for "A Fellowship of Concern and the Declining
Doctrine of the Spirituality of the Church in the Presbyterian Church in
the United States," also published by the "Journal of Presbyterian
History," Fall 1997.
Entries being received for 1999 contest
The Presbyterian Historical Society is accepting nominations for its
1999 awards now. Deadline for entries is July 1, 1999. Four copies of
each submission must be included.
Entries must have a publication date of 1997, 1998 or 1999. For the
Makemie Award, books accepted for publication with a projected publication
date of 1999 also may be submitted
in page proofs.
Submissions should be in English. By "American Presbyterian or
Reformed" the society means North, Central and South America and/or
American Presbyterian/Reformed Christians on other continents. Submissions
for the Stowe Award are normally made by local churches. Submissions for
the other awards are normally made by the author or publisher.
