Churchwide Study of Gambling Is Underway

    by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Presbytery and synod executives of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) have received materials for a churchwide study of "Gambling and
the Christian Faith" that was mandated by the 208th General Assembly
(1996).

Developed by the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy (ACSWP)
and the National Ministries Division's Office of Corporate Witness, the
study is intended to lead to a resolution on the issue that will be
presented by ACSWP to the 212th General Assembly in 2000.

The 1996 Assembly asked for the study as the number of state-sponsored
lotteries dramatically increased, as well as the proliferation of casino
gambling operations in many states and on numerous Native American
reservations.

It asked that several General Assembly Council entities "provide for a
study process undertaken with congregations, presbyteries and synods, as
well as other individuals and constituencies, including representatives of
tribal governments, which may lead to a resolution on issues related to
gambling and games."

Feedback from those choosing to study "Gambling and Christian Faith"
will be accepted by ACSWP until October 1999.

In addition to presbytery and synod offices, copies of the study
materials are available free of charge by contacting Presbyterian
Distribution Services, 100 Witherspoon Street, Room 2412, Louisville, KY
40202, or by calling 1-800-524-2612 and requesting product number PDS
72-620-98-001.

More information about the churchwide study of "Gambling and the
Christian Faith" is available from ACSWP associate the Rev. Belinda Curry
at (502) 569-5813 or associate for corporate witness the Rev. Vernon
Broyles at (502) 569-5812.
