NTERNATIONAL MINISTRIES MISSIONARIES AND STAFF GATHER
or the first time in the history of American Baptist International Ministries ne
arly all of the overseas missionaries and executive staff have met together in o
ne place. One hundred twenty-nine of the organizations 134 missionaries, repre
senting assignments to 23 different countries, gathered with International Minis
tries executive staff from Valley Forge Jan. 5-9 at the American Baptist Assemb
ly in Green Lake, Wis.
For me its a renewal and a chance to learn about what is going on in other miss
ionaries areas, said Janine Gravley, missionary to Hong Kong. Even though we
see the names [in] e-mail and over the Internet its wonderful to be able to pu
t faces with them, to know who youre praying for and to learn about their strug
gles. Sometimes what theyre struggling about in Africa is what were strugglin
g about in Hong Kong.
issionaries had a chance to network and exchange ideas on various overseas minis
tries, effective communications with U.S. supporters, personal spiritual develop
ment and raising children overseas, among other topics. They also were able to
discuss specific concerns with International Ministries staff and to spent time
participating in the next phase of the Called to the Future Together planning
process. Its great that International Ministries is relying on the people on
the ground to participate in the whole of the process to create the strategies
for the future, said Dan Cole, missionary to the Republic of South Africa.
hile the parents were in meetings the 96 missionary kids present had a program a
ll their own. After spending each day in their own carefully designed program th
e children and youth participated in the evening worship services, giving a fami
ly atmosphere to the conference.
This has been a week quite unlike anything I have experienced before, said Dr.
John Sundquist, executive director of International Ministries. We thank God t
hat we were able to gather all members of our family together to worship, to wor
k and play, to talk and just to get to know one another better. It was wonderfu
l.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO: MISSIONARY UPDATE
American Baptist International Ministries officials have reported that several m
issionaries who were evacuated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo last Au
gust are planning to return to that country. Members of some families, however,
may be going back to Durban, Republic of South Africa, until it is deemed safe
for them to return.
That determination, consistent with communications between International Ministr
ies and the leadership of the Baptist Community of Western Congo (CBCO), Interna
tional Ministries partner in the Congo, was made following a day-long meeting i
nvolving the missionaries and members of the Crisis Management Team during the r
ecent all-staff gathering at the American Baptist Assembly, Green Lake, Wis.
len Chapman will be the first missionary to return to Kinshasa; he will be follo
wed shortly by Bill Clemmer and George Win. They will assess the situation ther
e and, together with CBCO and other sources, provide information that will be us
ed to determine the return dates and placements for the other missionaries.
The full return of International Ministries personnel, of course, is dependent o
n whether the conditions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are safe for ou
r missionaries and their families to remain, said Dr. John Sundquist, executive
director of International Ministries. The missionaries are working with the Cr
isis Management Team to draw up contingency plans in case the missionaries have
to leave once again. During this time of transition, said Sundquist, we ask
for your prayers for our missionaries and their families and for our brothers an
d sisters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We pray that the war ends so
on.
